What happened to Hakoda’s title/throne?

I am a bit confused, how is the Chief of the NWT in charge of the SWT?

Hakoda was Chief and then what? If Sokka had no heir, then there’s Katara and she has three kids. Shouldn’t Bumi, as the oldest, be Chief?

Did I miss some backstory or has this not yet been explained?

Okay this is my understanding of it.

Both Water Tribes were countries rather than towns/cities. They were big.

There were other villages in the South Pole other than Katara and Sokka’s village. Hakoda was chief of that one village. Like a mayor. He wasn’t chief of the Southern Water Tribe. The Southern Water Tribe had no chief anymore. The Fire Nation destroyed or captured their leaders.

Which is why Sokka can’t really pull the “I’m like a prince too” thing with Yue. It isn’t comparable.

The place visited in The Siege of the North was basically like their capital. They may have had other, smaller cities, or that city may have temporarily absorbed refugees from outlying settlements to protect them against the Fire Nation.

It makes sense that the chief/king of the NWT, already being in charge of several cities/towns, would have little trouble adding the SWT to the areas they rule, especially given all the help rebuilding after the war. The SWT may even have welcomed this incorporation at the time, because it meant having new construction, healers, public services, basically a better quality of life.

Oh shit, I’d missed that. What did happen to Sokka’s kids, if he had any?
